Low blood pressure tied to increased death risk after stroke

High blood pressure is a known risk factor for stroke and for deaths, but it appears that having low blood pressure is as great a risk factor for death following stroke.

A new study published in the journal Stroke has noted that stroke patients with low blood pressure and non-cardiovascular conditions, like cancer and dementia, have a greater risk of death after stroke. Around 30,000 veteran patients were identified with a first ischemic stroke who had outpatient blood pressure measurements within the 18 months prior to the stroke. Those with lower blood pressure were found to have the highest mortality, especially the subgroup of patients with at least one comorbidity, such as smoking, cardiovascular disease, cancer or dementia… (ET Healthworld – ANI, November 6, 2021)
